RSMB is the only research organisation that has continuously provided an audience measurement service to BARB (the Broadcasters Audience Research Board) and its stakeholders.

Soon after the company’s inception in 1987 RSMB began its unbroken relationship with BARB. RSMB were initially tasked with undertaking specifically focused research of the developing satellite television market.

BARB took the decision to re-structure the UK’s television measurement service into separate contracts for ‘design and quality control’ and meter panel operations. RSMB were awarded the design and QC contract for the service, which commenced in August 1991.

RSMB has subsequently been awarded two similar contracts encompassing methodology, statistical design and quality control for the overall service. The first of these contracts was for the service that started in 2002; the second, awarded in December 2007, is for the BARB 2010 service, which has been extended to continue until the end of 2018.
